Even though we’re all busy, and cleaning makeup brushes isn’t the top of most of our priority list, maybe it should be. It’s quick & easy, and it’s so essential for our skin.
We should be washing our makeup brushes at least once a week, especially foundation & concealer brushes. The bristles come in contact with oil & blemishes & can cause breakouts if the brushes are not clean. Don’t forget to wash your beauty blender or makeup sponge too, replacing them every three months.
So what options do we have for cleaning our brushes? At Oh Hey Beaut we have a list below to help you conquer your brush game!
Complete a thorough clean with a cleansing gel.
- Clean with a cleansing gel by running the brush bristles under lukewarm water. Avoid the part where the bristles meet the handle, this could cause issues with the glue & could cause loss of bristles.
- Add a cleansing gel to the bristles, rub in & wash thoroughly. If you have a makeup brush cleaning mat, run your brush over the mat to help clean the bristles thoroughly.
- Use a dry soft towel to pad the bristles gently, avoid tugging the bristles which could loosen them from the handle.
- Leave the brush in a dry area on its side. Leaving them in an upright position will cause any remaining water to seep down the handle and affect the handle & glue.

Remember to always store makeup brushes in a cool, dry area, like a dressing room, or a brush bag. Bathrooms are not ideal; they are constantly damp and will cause bacteria to thrive on your brushes.

It’s important not to share unclean makeup brushes, conjunctivitis & cold soars can spread easily, so always use your own brushes or clean brushes to avoid this.
